Last week, David Lynch passed away. Aged 78.
I don’t know much about this chap other than he directed one of my all-time favourite films: The Elephant Man.
Based on the true story of Joseph Merrick who suffered the most severe deformities. His doctors found it impossible to treat and cure, especially his curved spine enlarged skull. What is unfathomable was his sweet, gentle and kind soul in the face of such nastiness, cruelty and such backwardness.
A raw and moving film with a stellar cast, it’s a special film which I have reviewed on this blog.
I'm a huge fan of "The Elephant Man" too. I saw it at some point during the 1980s and was stunned by it, especially John Hurt's performance. Actually, it was the first time I'd ever seen John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins or John Gielgud on the screen and it was a revelation! I would love to see it again now.
ReplyDeleteNice one.
DeleteSad time. From memory The Elephant Man was on the TV a few weeks back to view. An amazing movie.
ReplyDeleteHe wanted to spend 3 years in Europe studying art with Oskar Kokoschka. It didn't work out, but it was important to dream big.
ReplyDeleteThe book is even more interesting than the film.
ReplyDeleteThanks jabblog. Will see if I can have a look soon.
DeleteThe movie was incredible, I want to read the book.
ReplyDeleteThat movie left me with an unpleasant feeling afterwards. Still repugnant and memorable
ReplyDeleteThe Elephant Man was good. But his greatest achievement was surely Twin Peaks. It was so different, so original.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nick. Will try to watch it soon. 😊
DeleteI did hear that. Sad. I did like that movie.
